How long is the drive from Athens to Meteora?

4 h 14 min and 346 km from Syntagma Square to the Great Meteoron without traffic, routed on OpenStreetMap: 145 min and 196.4 km to Thermopylae, where we stop for 15 minutes at the monument to Leonidas, then 109 min and 149.8 km on to the rocks. The way back from Kalabaka is 239 min and 340.4 km. In all the day holds 512 min of driving, eight and a half hours, and 3 h 25 min at the stops; the rest of the fourteen hours is the margin for traffic, a coffee on the motorway and the walk from the car to each gate. From the cruise terminals at Piraeus the first leg is 2 h 34 min and 205 km and from the airport 2 h 36 min and 216 km, routed the same way.

Which monasteries do we visit, and on which days?

Up to three, chosen by the weekday: the Great Meteoron, the largest, Varlaam next to it, and the nunnery of Saint Stephen at the far end of the road; we plan 50 minutes at the first and 40 at each of the other two. Each keeps its own closing day, so the day’s set is fixed when we confirm your date. The Great Meteoron closes every Tuesday, and from 1 November to 31 March on Wednesdays and Thursdays as well, plus 5 to 7 August, 30 September to 1 October and the whole of February. Varlaam closes on Fridays all year and, according to the Holy Metropolis and the Ministry of Culture, on Thursdays in winter too, while the municipality lists Fridays only. Saint Stephen closes on Mondays and shuts between its morning and afternoon sessions every day. Summer hours run from 09:30 to 15:00 at the Great Meteoron and from 09:00 to 16:00 at Varlaam; Saint Stephen opens from 09:00 to 13:30 and again from 15:30 to 17:30; in winter the hours are shorter. Every one of these figures was read on the monasteries’, the Metropolis’s or the municipality’s own pages on 27 September 2026, and the monasteries say their schedules can change without notice. The entrance fee is paid at each door; no official page publishes the amount, so this page prints none.

One long day or two days?

One day means 14 hours door to door, with more time on the road than at the rocks; that is what this page sells, and it is the answer for guests who have one day. Two days means the same drive split in half, a night in Kalabaka at the foot of the rocks, the monasteries we skipped and a slower morning. We quote a two-day version on request through the custom tour form, with the hotel booked by you; we do not sell the room. Steps, toilets, shade and lunch

The monasteries are reached on foot up stairways cut into the rock: the municipal tourist office warns that most involve many steps, and no source publishes a count. The one exception is Saint Stephen, entered over a small bridge without steps, with a lift for visitors with disabilities; it is the monastery the office recommends to anyone with health difficulties. The driver waits at each one while you climb. Public toilets exist at the monasteries. There are no cafés up at them, so the office advises carrying a snack; we plan lunch afterwards, 60 minutes in Kalabaka at your own expense. For the shade on the stairways, ask your driver on the day: no official page states it. The vehicle is air-conditioned with bottled water in it.

Driver or licensed guide?

Your driver knows the road and the order of the day, waits at every stop and gives practical orientation; guiding inside the monasteries is the work of state-licensed guides under Law 5121/2024, and we add one on request, quoted with the day. The dress code applies to everyone: no shorts or sleeveless tops, and at the Great Meteoron no trousers for women; skirts and shawls are lent at the entrances, the municipal office says, but a wrap of your own is safer.

What does it cost, and where do we meet?

The day is priced on the 8-hour table, the longest on the rate card and the one every longer day takes: 700 EUR per group for up to three guests, 800 EUR for four to seven and 100 EUR per person from eight; the form shows your total, the office confirms it by email, and the two-day version is quoted on request. Nothing is paid on the site, and a booking can be cancelled free of charge until 72 hours before the start. The day starts at your Athens hotel, in the arrivals hall of the airport or, for ships that stay overnight, outside your terminal at Piraeus, always with a sign with your name; the earliest start on the booking form is 07:00, and an early one is what this day needs.
