The palace, a village in the hills behind it and the museum, with 41 minutes of driving in all. The route strip above gives the legs as OpenStreetMap routes them without traffic: from the cruise terminal 8 min and 6.1 km to Knossos for 85 minutes, 13 min and 9.8 km on to Archanes for 50 minutes in the village, 19 min and 15.1 km back down to the Archaeological Museum for 75 minutes, then 1 min and 0.6 km to the terminal. Some three quarters of an hour stay unallocated, for the ticket queue, a slower palace or a longer coffee in the village; a hotel start simply changes the first leg. If the galleries matter more to you than the village, the 4-hour tour gives the museum 90 minutes and leaves Archanes out.
Tickets: 20 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr) full and 10 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr) reduced at the gate, or e-tickets from the Ministry’s portal ahead of the day; free admission on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September, 28 October and the first and third Sundays from November to March. The site opens daily at 08:00 and closes at 20:00 from April to August, then earlier in steps through the autumn and at 17:00 in winter, with the last admission 20 minutes before closing:

Eighty-five minutes is the palace at a walking pace: the courts, the restored storerooms and the painted corridors that Arthur Evans excavated from 1900 to 1931 after Minos Kalokairinos had opened the first trenches in 1878, as the portal’s page tells it, on a site now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with five other Minoan palaces. The portal lists a café, a shop, toilets and parking at the entrance.
Archanes lies 13 minutes south of the palace in the hills, and the fifty minutes we plan there are a walk through the village and a coffee or an early lunch at a table of your choosing, the driver waiting with the vehicle. No official page gives visitor facts for a village, so we print none: no ticket, no hours, no claim about a winery. If you want a winery visit on this road, say so in the request and the office tells you what can be arranged within the hours; the day stays yours to shorten or lengthen at each stop.
20 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr) at the door, or 12 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr) for Greek and EU citizens over 65 between November and March only, the one reduction the portal lists. Summer hours run 08:00 to 20:00 and winter hours 08:30 to 15:30, except on Wednesdays, when the doors open at 13:00 in summer and 10:00 in winter; the full table by weekday is on the Crete page. On this tour the museum comes last, after the village, so even a Wednesday morning start finds it open. Seventy-five minutes is the Minoan halls without the rest: the frescoes from the palace in their own gallery, the bull’s-head rhyton, the gold bees from Malia, the Snake Goddesses and the Phaistos Disc, in the building the portal dates to 1937 to 1940 and the refurbishment to 2014, with 27 halls in all. A lift and toilets are inside, by the portal’s list, and the museum is a minute on foot from Eleftherias Square.
Two of the three stops are a site and a museum, where Law 5121/2024 reserves guiding to state-licensed guides, so a guide is the one extra worth settling before the day. The driver’s part is the road and the gates: each entrance in turn, the vehicle kept at it, the village shown on foot, the time kept against the ship or the hotel. Ask for a licensed guide when you book, for the palace, the museum or both, and the office quotes the fee with the day; book none, and the Ministry’s signs and the gallery labels carry you through at your own speed.
Lunch first, because it is the one settled thing: Archanes, in the fifty minutes of the village stop, at your own cost. Toilets are listed by the Ministry’s portal at Knossos and at the museum, where there is also a lift. On steps and shade the portal says only that both sites are accessible, and nothing describes the village’s lanes, so no figure is printed here; expect an open hillside site at Knossos and an indoor museum, with the rest, where the vehicle stops and how far the walk is, as the driver’s orientation at each gate. Walking shoes, and a hat for the palace in summer.
One figure for the vehicle and the driver, by party: 400 EUR with up to three guests in a sedan, 500 EUR with four to seven in a minivan, which four share at 125 EUR a head and seven at 71 EUR; eight or more travel by minibus at the per-person rate the ticket above prints from the office’s rate card. On top: the two gate tickets, your table in Archanes, and a licensed guide if you ask for one. The site takes no payment; the office confirms by email, the driver is paid on the day.
From a ship: outside the passenger terminal of your pier, name sign up; five hours plus the 90-minute margin is the call this tour needs, the card above prints it and the booking form holds you to it, and the cruise port page has the piers, the terminals and the clearance times with their sources. From a hotel: at the door, in Heraklion or on the coast beside it, with the return to the same door. The Crete page sets this tour beside the 4-hour one.
In Greece, guiding visitors in museums and archaeological sites is the work of state-qualified guides registered with the Ministry of Tourism (Law 5121/2024, Articles 33, 34 and 40). Our drivers are not guides: they drive, wait and give practical orientation on the road. We can book a licensed guide for you on request and quote the guide separately. How hiring a driver in Greece works
Cruise guests: at the exit of your ship's passenger terminal. The driver holds a sign with your name; the port has two terminals and the Port Authority's schedule names your pier.
Your driver waits at the exit of the passenger terminal with a sign with your name. Give us the ship's name and its times when you book: the port has two passenger terminals and the Port Authority's cruise schedule names the pier of every call, IV-V or II, so the driver goes to the terminal of your pier.
At your hotel in Heraklion or along the coast near it; further away on request, with the drive counted in the hours.
A folding wheelchair travels in the boot; tell us in the request.
Cancel free of charge up to 72 hours before the start; tell us by email or WhatsApp.
Inside the last 72 hours, or if nobody shows up, the full price is due.
Changes of date or group size are free until the same 72-hour limit.
The full wording: the cancellation policy and the booking terms.
No. The Knossos ticket and the museum's are paid at the gate and printed above with the date we checked them; Archanes has no ticket.
Not as a fixed stop: no official page states one, so the page names none. Say so in the request and the office tells you what fits in the hours; the village stop is a walk and a table of your choosing.
Yes, on a call of at least six and a half hours: five hours plus the margin before all-aboard. The driver waits at the exit of the passenger terminal with a sign with your name, and the museum, the last stop, is minutes from the quay.
In Archanes, in the fifty minutes of the village stop, at your own expense, with the driver waiting; the museum comes after it, open on a Wednesday from 13:00 in summer and 10:00 in winter.
The driver drives, waits and gives practical orientation; guiding inside the palace or the museum is for state-licensed guides under Law 5121/2024. Ask for one when you book and it is quoted with your day.
