The palace and its finds, with 18 minutes of driving in all, the least of any tour we run. Routed on OpenStreetMap without traffic from the cruise terminal: 8 min and 6.1 km up to Knossos, 100 minutes there; 9 min and 6 km back into town to the Archaeological Museum, 90 minutes in its galleries; 1 min and 0.6 km to the terminal. Half an hour is left over for the ticket queue at the palace or a coffee between the two. From a hotel the first leg follows the address. The order is fixed by the finds themselves: what the palace shows in the ground, the museum shows in the case, so the galleries make more sense after the site. The village of Archanes does not fit in four hours; it is on the 5-hour tour.
The full ticket is 20 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr) and the reduced one 10 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr), paid at the gate or bought as an e-ticket on the Ministry’s portal, which admits free on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September, 28 October and the first and third Sundays from November to March. The site opens daily from 08:00, until 20:00 from April to August and then in steps down to 17:00 in winter, with the last admission 20 minutes before closing; the table by period is on the Crete page. The portal’s own page tells the story in two names: Minos Kalokairinos, the merchant who dug the first trenches on the Kephala hill in 1878, and Arthur Evans, who excavated the palace and much of the town from 1900 to 1931, and it notes the site’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List with five other Minoan palaces. A hundred minutes is the courts, the restored storerooms and the painted corridors at a walking pace, with the café, the shop and the toilets the portal lists at the entrance.
The full ticket is 20 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr); the reduced ticket, 12 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr), is sold only from November to March to Greek and EU citizens over 65 with an ID or passport, as the portal states. The museum opens at 08:00 from April to October and at 08:30 in winter, except on Wednesdays, when it opens at 13:00 in summer and 10:00 in winter, so on a Wednesday this tour’s order, the palace first and the museum last, is the only one that works:

Ninety minutes covers the Minoan halls at a steady pace: the portal describes 27 halls from the Neolithic to Roman times, the finds from Knossos among them, the frescoes in a gallery of their own, the bull’s-head rhyton, the gold bees from Malia, the faience Snake Goddesses and the Phaistos Disc. The museum stands a minute’s walk from Eleftherias Square, with a lift and toilets inside, by the portal’s list.
An archaeological site and a museum in one morning: this is the tour on which the question matters. Guiding inside either is the work of state-licensed guides under Law 5121/2024. Our driver brings you to the gate, waits with the vehicle, tells you how long you have and where to come out, but does not guide; a licensed guide for the palace, the museum or both is booked in advance on request and quoted with your day. Without one, the Ministry’s signs at Knossos and the museum’s labels carry you through at your own pace.
Toilets: the Ministry’s portal lists a WC at both sites, a café, a shop and parking at Knossos, and a lift at the museum. Steps and shade: the portal marks both sites accessible and says nothing more, so we print no guessed figure; the palace is an open site on the Kephala hill with paths between the courts, the museum is indoors, and your driver gives the practical orientation at each gate, where the vehicle waits and how far the walk is. Wear walking shoes, and a hat for the palace in summer. Lunch is not planned into the four hours; if you would rather sit down before the ship, the half hour in hand is yours at your own expense, and the driver tells you where the nearest tables are.
The price is for the vehicle and the driver: 300 EUR for up to three guests in a sedan and 400 EUR for four to seven in a minivan, which is 100 EUR each for four and 57 EUR each for seven; from eight guests the rate is per person in a minibus, printed above from the office’s rate card. Paid at the gate and not in the price: the two tickets, anything you eat, and a licensed guide if you ask for one. Nothing is paid on the site; the office confirms by email and you pay the driver on the day.
Cruise guests: at the exit of your ship’s passenger terminal, with a sign with your name; the tour needs a call of four hours plus the 90-minute margin before all-aboard, which the card above prints and the booking form checks, and the cruise port page explains the piers, the two terminals and the clearance times. Hotel guests: at the hotel in Heraklion or along the coast near it, and back there at the end. The Crete page compares this tour with the 5-hour one.
In Greece, guiding visitors in museums and archaeological sites is the work of state-qualified guides registered with the Ministry of Tourism (Law 5121/2024, Articles 33, 34 and 40). Our drivers are not guides: they drive, wait and give practical orientation on the road. We can book a licensed guide for you on request and quote the guide separately. How hiring a driver in Greece works
Cruise guests: at the exit of your ship's passenger terminal. The driver holds a sign with your name; the port has two terminals and the Port Authority's schedule names your pier.
Your driver waits at the exit of the passenger terminal with a sign with your name. Give us the ship's name and its times when you book: the port has two passenger terminals and the Port Authority's cruise schedule names the pier of every call, IV-V or II, so the driver goes to the terminal of your pier.
At your hotel in Heraklion or along the coast near it; further away on request, with the drive counted in the hours.
A folding wheelchair travels in the boot; tell us in the request.
Cancel free of charge up to 72 hours before the start; tell us by email or WhatsApp.
Inside the last 72 hours, or if nobody shows up, the full price is due.
Changes of date or group size are free until the same 72-hour limit.

No. The Knossos ticket and the museum's are paid at the gate and printed above with the date we checked them; the museum's reduced ticket goes only to Greek and EU citizens over 65, and only from November to March.
Yes: the Ministry's portal sells e-tickets for both sites. The driver drops you at the palace gate first, 8 minutes from the port, and at the museum's door after it.
Yes, on a call of at least five and a half hours: four hours plus the margin before all-aboard. Ships berth alongside at Heraklion, and the driver waits at the exit of the passenger terminal with a sign with your name.
No: on Wednesdays it opens at 13:00 in summer and 10:00 in winter, which is why the tour keeps the palace first and the museum last. The hours print above from the Ministry's page.
The driver drives, waits and gives practical orientation; guiding inside the palace or the museum is for state-licensed guides under Law 5121/2024. Ask for one when you book and it is quoted with your day.
