From a cruise ship off Santorini, Oia is a tender to the old port of Fira, the cable car up or 587 steps, then 13 minutes and 10.8 km by road from the top station. Ferries land at Athinios, where the vehicle waits at the quay. Greece Private Tours meets you at either place with a sign; below are the two ports, the times and the way back.
Cruise ships lie off Fira on mooring buoys or at anchor in the caldera and land their passengers by tender at the Bay of Fira, the old port; the Bay of Fira is the main cruise port and Athinios the auxiliary one. Since 2026, ships certified for more than 1,000 passengers land 70 percent of their guests at the Bay of Fira and 30 percent at Athinios, and smaller ships choose either. The ship decides who lands where, not the passenger, so both meeting points are on every Santorini tour: the exit of the cable car’s top station for the old port, the quay for Athinios.
The cable car takes three minutes and a one-way ticket is 10 EUR (checked 8 Oct 2026, santorinicablecar.gr). Cabins leave every 20 minutes from April to October and the line moves 1,200 people an hour, so the wait grows with the number of ships in the bay. The alternatives on the port authority’s own list are the 587 steps and the mule path. The cable-car guide has the timetable by month and what to do about the queue.
Your driver waits at the exit of the top station with a sign with your name. From there it is 13 minutes and 10.8 km to Oia on the road along the rim, without traffic, the first leg of the 4-hour tour; the 5-hour tour makes a photo stop at the blue-domed church of Firostefani on the way, 2 minutes out of Fira. In Oia the lanes are for walking, so the vehicle waits at the edge of the village while you walk through it; the 4-hour tour plans 45 minutes there, the 5-hour tour 40 and the 8-hour day an hour.
Plan backwards from your all-aboard time. We end every cruise day 90 minutes before it, and the last leg is the same road in reverse: 13 minutes from Oia to the top station without traffic, then the cable car queue down, which forms again in the afternoon, then the tender. Each tour on the cruise port page prints the call it needs, its hours sold plus that margin. We cannot make the ship wait: the margin is the plan, and the ship’s timetable is yours to watch, so tell us the arrival and all-aboard times when you book and we build the day from them.
For guests who cannot queue, would rather not ride the cable car or are afraid of heights, a reserved boat from the tender pier to Athinios puts you in the vehicle without the climb: a representative meets you on the pier with a sign with your name, and your driver waits at Athinios. We arrange it on request and quote it with your day. From Athinios the drive to Oia is longer than from Fira, and the day is planned with that in mind.
Oia is the first stop of the 4-hour tour, which is 400 EUR for 4 people together, and of the 5-hour tour at 500 EUR. For a ride to Oia and back with no stops in between, a car and driver by the hour costs 50 EUR per hour; for a taxi ride only, our sister brand Santorini Taxi operates that service and we do not.
