Ten hours from Thessaloniki with a Greece Private Tours driver, by request: the Petralona cave and its museum, the Byzantine tower of Nea Fokea, the stone village of Afytos above the Toroneos gulf for lunch, and the cape of Possidi with the Blue Flag beach beside its lighthouse; 231 minutes' driving, routed on OpenStreetMap. The office quotes the day for your party and your date.
Planned at ten hours with an hour in the cave, lunch in Afytos and two hours at the cape; the office confirms the length when it quotes the day, and a day without the cave, or with more beach, is a matter of asking.
Start and end: White Tower

Four stops and 231 minutes at the wheel, routed on OpenStreetMap without traffic: from the White Tower 53 min and 51.5 km to the Petralona cave for an hour with its museum; 43 min and 39.1 km down the eastern shore of the peninsula to Nea Fokea for half an hour at the tower, the church and the beach; 7 min and 5.3 km on to Afytos for two hours, the lanes, the balcony over the gulf and lunch; 29 min and 23.7 km across to the cape of Possidi for two hours of sand and sea; 99 min and 102.3 km back to the city, or to your hotel. Thirty-nine minutes stay loose. The cave sets the morning: by the Ministry’s portal it opens at eight from April to October and at half past eight in winter, when every Tuesday is closed, so a start between eight and half past nine reaches it as it opens and the beach by early afternoon. The Thessaloniki page sets this day beside the Pella and Vergina day and the other days quoted on request, and the Philippi and Kavala day is the other road that ends on a beach.
Fifty minutes from Thessaloniki by the portal’s own reckoning, and 20 minutes on foot above the village of Petralona, the cave was found by chance in 1959 by villagers searching for a spring; the next year amateur explorers came on a human skull in excellent condition, the most important anthropological fossil in Greece, dated between 150,000 and 300,000 years ago, and the cave has since given fossils of extinct large carnivores too, as the Ministry’s page tells it. It covers 10,000 square metres and reopened to the public in February 2024; a large number of the finds are shown in the Anthropological Museum beside it, with hundreds of stone tools and paintings and sculptures of the life and evolution of early humans. The cave’s ticket is 10 EUR (checked 27 Oct 2026, hh.gr), 5 EUR (checked 27 Oct 2026, hh.gr) reduced, paid at the desk, and the museum has a ticket of its own at the same desk; admission is free on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September, 28 October and the first and third Sunday of each month from November to March, and the site closes on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25 and 26 December, with the last admission 20 minutes before closing. The portal lists a WC, a parking area and accessibility among the amenities without saying what the last covers. The hours as the portal prints them:
Checked 27 Oct 2026, hh.gr.
Forty-three minutes south, the road reaches the eastern shore of the first finger of Halkidiki at Nea Fokea, a settlement of fish taverns and a small port with a beach where the pines reach the water, as the Municipality of Kassandra’s page describes it. At the entrance of the village stands the church of St Paul, with its fair on 29 and 30 June for the apostles Paul and Peter, and beside it St Paul’s passage, underground rooms and passages with holy water, where the legend has the apostle hiding in the rock from his Roman pursuers; the Byzantine tower above the port is the village’s landmark and the stage of its summer events. Half an hour covers the tower from outside, the church and a walk on the beach: no official page prints hours or a ticket for the tower or the passage, so the day promises neither open, and the driver waits by the port.
Seven minutes on, Afytos spreads over a hill above the Toroneos gulf with the horizon of the Aegean between the ends of Sithonia and Kassandra, and the Region’s tourism site calls it the most traditional settlement among the resorts of Halkidiki, with a history of at least 5,000 years and the ancient city of Pallini behind it. The church of Agios Dimitrios of 1859 holds the central square, the cobbled streets run between stone houses with wooden inscriptions and inscriptions in the stone, and the Aletras house on the square keeps the folklore museum, whose hours no official page we read prints, so it is not promised; below the village lies a long sandy beach, which the municipality’s page counts among the purest and warmest waters of the Mediterranean. Two hours here are the lanes, the view from the edge of the rock and lunch, at your own expense, in a taverna of your own choosing; both official pages describe the village’s taverns and restaurants without naming one, and so does this page. The driver parks at the edge of the village and waits.
Twenty-nine minutes across the peninsula to its western shore, the fishing village of Possidi stands on the site of ancient Mende and takes its name from Poseidon, whose sanctuary lies next to the beach, by the Region’s page; the cape beyond it, which the municipality calls Myti, the nose, is a sandy tongue that changes its shape with the wind and the water from season to season and from night to day, calm on one side and waves on the other. The municipality’s own page is plain about it: deep water and many currents, a beach for good swimmers only. So the two hours of sea are planned on Aegeopelagitika beach beside the lighthouse, more than three kilometres of sand west of the cape, with sand on the seabed and the Blue Flag every summer, organised spots with sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets and changing rooms beside free space for your own towel, and Olympus, Ossa and Pelion on the horizon; the walk out along the tongue to the water’s edge is yours as far as you choose, and the historic lighthouse stands at the beach’s end. The driver waits at the beach’s car park.
Our driver drives, waits at every stop with the vehicle and gives the practical orientation, where the car stands and where to meet; inside the cave and its museum the law keeps guiding for state-licensed guides (Law 5121/2024), so a licensed guide for that hour is booked on request and quoted with the day, and the villages and the beach need none. The day is run by request, so no figure prints here: you ask for it with the form beside the title, and the office answers by email with one figure for the vehicle and the driver, for your party and your date; the cave’s tickets are paid at the desk, and nothing is paid on the site. The driver-or-guide guide explains the rule. For a day without the cave, a second beach, or the villages of the inland hills, say so in the custom tour form.
Lunch is in Afytos, your own, in the two hours planned there. Steps and shade no official page counts, so no figure is printed: the cave is reached 20 minutes on foot above the village by the portal’s page, which lists a WC and a parking area at the site, the lanes of Afytos are cobbled and climb from the beach to the square, and the Region’s page names toilets and changing rooms at the organised spots of Aegeopelagitika; the driver’s orientation at each stop covers the way in, the steps, the shade and the nearest toilets, which no page we read lists. Bring swimwear, a towel and a hat; sunbeds and umbrellas at the organised spots are rented on the beach, at your own expense.
One figure from the office, per group, for the vehicle and the driver, answered by email within the time the contact page promises; the total is for the party, not per person, so the more of you ride, the less each pays. The day’s tickets are the cave’s, 10 EUR (checked 27 Oct 2026, hh.gr) a person, with the date it was checked, and the museum’s own beside it, both paid at the desk, where the Ministry’s reduced and free categories apply as its page states them; the fees guide lists every ticket we print. A booking cancels free of charge up to 72 hours before the start.
At the door of your hotel in Thessaloniki at the agreed time, anywhere in the city or its suburbs, and back to it. The figures above start at the White Tower, 53 min and 52 km to the cave, and the first and the last leg follow your address; a hotel in the centre adds almost nothing, and from one further out the office names the difference when it confirms. A start at half past eight reaches the cave as it fills, Afytos at noon and the cape by three; in winter the day starts at eight for the light. The Thessaloniki page has the meeting rules for every day from the city.
In Greece, guiding visitors in museums and archaeological sites is the work of state-qualified guides registered with the Ministry of Tourism (Law 5121/2024, Articles 33, 34 and 40). Our drivers are not guides: they drive, wait and give practical orientation on the road. We can book a licensed guide for you on request and quote the guide separately. How hiring a driver in Greece works
At the door of your hotel in Thessaloniki at the agreed time, and back to it; the legs start at the White Tower, 3 minutes by car from Aristotelous Square by the Ministry's portal, and the first and the last follow your address.
A folding wheelchair travels in the boot; tell us in the request.
Cancel free of charge up to 72 hours before the start; tell us by email or WhatsApp.
Inside the last 72 hours, or if nobody shows up, the full price is due.
Changes of date or group size are free until the same 72-hour limit.
The full wording: the cancellation policy and the booking terms.
Because the day is run by request: the office answers your request by email with one figure for the vehicle and the driver, for your party and your date, and nothing is paid on the site. The cave's ticket and the museum's are paid at the desk and are the day's only tickets.
By the Ministry's portal it opens every day from April to October, 08:00 to 20:00 through August and stepping down to 18:00 by late October, and 08:30 to 15:30 from November to March with every Tuesday closed; it closes on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25 and 26 December, and admission is free on the portal's free days. The office reads the table before it confirms a date, and a winter Tuesday takes the day without the cave.
Yes: say so in the request, and the hour goes to Afytos or the cape, or the day starts later. The cave is the day's one ticketed stop and lies on the road south, so it costs no detour; without it the day is a beach day with lunch in the stone village.
The municipality's own page says the cape, Myti, has deep water and many currents and is for good swimmers only. The swim we plan is on Aegeopelagitika beach beside the lighthouse, three kilometres of sand with organised spots, sunbeds, toilets and changing rooms and free space, Blue Flag every summer by the Region's page; the sandy tongue itself is for a walk and the view, as far as you choose.
In Afytos, at your own expense, in a taverna of your choosing in the lanes; the two official pages describe the village's taverns and restaurants without naming one, and so do we. The driver waits with the vehicle, and two hours there cover the lanes, the balcony over the gulf and the meal.
Yes, as a day of the cave, the tower, the stone village and a walk on the cape: the cave is open to 15:30 except on Tuesdays, the beaches keep no organised spots outside the season, and the light ends early, so the day starts at eight and reaches the cape by early afternoon. The sunset over Olympus from the western shore, which the Region's page names, is a winter reason of its own.
