A long day: about five hours of it are the drive to Thessaly and back.

2 h 43 min and 233.4 km from the White Tower to the Great Meteoron without traffic, routed on OpenStreetMap down the motorway past Katerini and Larissa and west across the plain to Kalabaka; 3 min and 0.8 km from the Great Meteoron to Varlaam, 7 min and 4.1 km on to Saint Stephen at the far end of the road, 9 min and 7.2 km down into Kalabaka, and 155 min and 227.9 km back to the city. In all 337 min of driving, five and a half hours, and 3 h 10 min at the stops; the remaining two hours of the eleven are the margin for traffic, a coffee on the motorway and the walk from the car to each gate. From a hotel the first and the last leg follow the address. The same rocks from Athens are a 14-hour day, because that road is a hundred kilometres longer each way; from Thessaloniki they are the nearest big city’s day out, and the Thessaloniki page sets this day beside the city tour, Pella and Vergina, and Dion and Olympus in one table. The other 11-hour road from the city runs east, to Philippi and Kavala with Ammolofi beach, a day we run by request and quote.
Up to three of the six, by the weekday: 50 minutes at the Great Meteoron, the largest and the highest, 40 at Varlaam on the next rock, and 40 at the nunnery of Saint Stephen, which the road reaches last. Each keeps a closing day of its own, read on the monasteries’, the Holy Metropolis’s and the municipality’s own pages on 27 September 2026: the Great Meteoron shuts on Tuesdays, and from 1 November to 31 March on Wednesdays and Thursdays as well, with longer closures from 5 to 7 August, on 30 September and 1 October and through February; Varlaam shuts on Fridays all year, and in winter on Thursdays too by two of the four official sources; Saint Stephen shuts on Mondays and for a midday break every day. A Tuesday in winter therefore holds Varlaam and Saint Stephen only, and a Monday the two big ones; when we confirm your date we name that day’s set, and the remaining three monasteries, Roussanou, Holy Trinity and Saint Nicholas Anapafsas, can replace one on request. Summer hours run 09:30 to 15:00 at the Great Meteoron, 09:00 to 16:00 at Varlaam, and 09:00 to 13:30 and 15:30 to 17:30 at Saint Stephen; winter hours are shorter, and every monastery warns that its schedule can change without notice. The entrance fee is paid at each door; no official page publishes the amount, so this page prints none.
Every monastery but one is climbed on stairways cut into the rock, and the municipal tourist office warns that most involve many steps without publishing a count; Saint Stephen is the exception, entered over a short bridge without steps and fitted with a lift, which is why it stays on this day for anyone who finds stairs hard. The driver parks below each one and waits with the vehicle while you climb; he gives the practical orientation at the foot of the steps, where the path goes, how long the climb takes, where to meet again. The stairways are open to the sun for most of their length, so the shade is a hat and the bottled water in the vehicle; inside, the courtyards and the churches are cool. Public toilets exist at the monasteries, and there is no café up at them, so the office advises a snack in the bag. Lunch is after the monasteries, 60 minutes in Kalabaka at the foot of the rocks, at your own expense, the driver waiting; tell us if you would rather eat in Kastraki, the village under the pillars, and the minutes move.
Your driver knows the road, the order of the day and the closing days, waits at every stop and gives the practical orientation; the frescoes and the history inside the monasteries are told by a state-licensed guide under Law 5121/2024, booked ahead on request and quoted with the day, and the driver-or-guide guide explains the rule. The dress code binds everyone: no shorts, bermudas or sleeveless tops, and at the Great Meteoron no trousers for women; skirts and shawls are lent at the entrances, the municipal office says, and a wrap of your own in the bag is the surer way in.
An 11-hour day takes the 8-hour table, the longest on the rate card and the one every longer day takes: 700 EUR per group for up to three guests in a sedan, 800 EUR for four to seven in a minivan, so six guests pay 133 EUR a head, and per person from eight; the form shows your total and the office confirms it by email before anything is paid. Not in the price and paid on the day: the monasteries’ entrance fees at their doors, lunch, and a licensed guide if you ask for one. A booking can be cancelled free of charge until 72 hours before the start. The price guide prints the whole rate card, and the Pella and Vergina day is the 8-hour road west for a shorter day out of the city.
At the door of your hotel in Thessaloniki at the agreed time, and back to it; the legs above start at the White Tower, and the first and the last follow your address. The day leaves at breakfast: with the earliest start on the booking form at 07:00 the Great Meteoron’s gate is reached before eleven, and an 08:00 start is what this day needs in winter, when the monasteries close at 14:00 and 15:00. From the airport or the passenger terminal of the port, name it in the message of the form and the office confirms the meeting point with the day; a cruise call of under twelve hours does not hold it, and the 4-hour city tour does.
In Greece, guiding visitors in museums and archaeological sites is the work of state-qualified guides registered with the Ministry of Tourism (Law 5121/2024, Articles 33, 34 and 40). Our drivers are not guides: they drive, wait and give practical orientation on the road. We can book a licensed guide for you on request and quote the guide separately. The full wording: the cancellation policy and the booking terms.
About 230 km by the motorway through Larissa and Trikala, two and a half hours each way without traffic as OpenStreetMap routes it; the minutes and kilometres of each leg are printed on this page from the routed day. It is the closest big city to the rocks, which is why the day is 11 hours where the Athens version is 14.
The Great Meteoron closes every Tuesday, and from November to March on Wednesdays and Thursdays too, plus 5 to 7 August, 30 September to 1 October and all of February; Varlaam closes on Fridays, and in winter on Thursdays according to two of the four official sources; Saint Stephen closes on Mondays and shuts for a midday break every day. We pick that day's open monasteries when we confirm.
Yes, at every monastery: no shorts, bermudas or sleeveless tops for anyone, and the Great Meteoron does not admit women in trousers; the municipal tourist office says skirts and shawls are lent at the entrances. Bring a wrap and long trousers or a skirt, so the visit does not depend on the loan.
Yes, by request: name the airport or the passenger terminal in the message of the booking form and the office confirms the meeting point and the first leg with the day. A cruise call of under twelve hours does not hold this day; the city tour does.
One day means 11 hours door to door with five of them on the road. Two days means a night in Kalabaka, the monasteries we skipped and a slower morning; we quote that version on request through the custom tour form, with the hotel booked by you.
