Two stops, 154 minutes at the wheel and the loosest of our four Thessaloniki days, routed on OpenStreetMap without traffic: 68 min and 90.8 km from the White Tower down the motorway to the Archaeological Park of Dion for two hours, the park and the museum; 15 min and 10.4 km to Litochoro for two hours, lunch and a walk; 71 min and 90.7 km back to the city. Eighty-six minutes are left loose, and they are the mountain’s: the road from Litochoro up the flank of Olympus as far as the time allows, with stops for the view, no hike planned. From a hotel the first and the last leg follow the address. The Pella and Vergina day is the other 8-hour road, west instead of south, and the Thessaloniki page compares the two in one table.
The park at the northern foothills of Mount Olympus is the largest archaeological site in Pieria, 750 stremmas, 75 hectares, of waters, rich flora and scattered remains from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD, as the Ministry’s portal describes it: the sanctuaries where the Macedonian kings sacrificed to Olympian Zeus, purified the army and swore their alliances, where Philip II celebrated his victories and Alexander held games and sacrifices before he set out for Asia; then the Roman colony Augustus settled with veterans, whose forum, baths, odeon, theatre, mosaic-floored houses and early Christian basilicas are most of what stands today, with the Hellenistic theatre against the mountain. The park’s ticket is 10 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr), reduced 5 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr). The Archaeological Museum of Dion has a page and a ticket line of its own at the same figures, with finds from the foothills and peaks of Olympus on its upper floor, and neither page says whether one ticket covers both. The portal lists a café or restaurant, a shop, WC, WiFi, parking and accessibility at the park and WC, WiFi, an elevator and accessibility at the museum, 5 minutes on foot from the settlement of Dion and 20 by car from Katerini. Two hours divide between the two, and the park is large by its own figure. The hours as the portal prints them, with a Tuesday rule of their own:
Checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr.
Litochoro is the town at the foot of the mountain, 15 minutes from the park on our routing, and the day gives it two hours: lunch at a table of your choice at your own expense, the driver waiting, and a walk in the town or towards the mouth of the Enipeas gorge, which opens above it. No official page states a ticket, hours or amenities here, so this page prints none; the table and the walk are the driver’s orientation on the day. After lunch the road climbs the flank of Olympus as far as the time allows, with stops for the view, and turns back for the 71 minutes to the city. The mountain is seen from the car and the roadside, not climbed: this is a driving day, and a hike is a different one.
Dion is a site of the Ministry of Culture, and inside the park and the museum guiding is the work of state-licensed guides under Law 5121/2024. Our driver drives, waits at the gate with the vehicle and gives the practical orientation; the sanctuaries and the Roman city are told by a licensed guide, booked ahead on request and quoted with the day. The driver-or-guide guide explains the rule.
Lunch is settled above: Litochoro, after the park. Toilets are listed by the portal at the park and at the museum, with a café or restaurant, a shop and parking at the park and an elevator at the museum. The park’s own description is of waters and rich flora round the remains, and the museum is indoors; how much shade the paths give, and where the steps are, no official page says, so no figure is printed and the driver’s orientation at each stop covers where the vehicle waits, how far the walk is, where the steps and the shade are. Walking shoes for the park, a layer for the mountain road.
The 8-hour day is 700 EUR per group for up to three guests in a sedan and 800 EUR for four to seven in a minivan, per person from eight, from the 8-hour table the ticket prints; the form shows your total, the office confirms it by email, and nothing is paid until it does. Paid at the gate and not in the price: the park’s ticket printed above with its date, the museum’s if it is charged apart, lunch, and a licensed guide if you ask for one. The price guide prints the rate card and the fees guide the tickets.
At the door of your hotel in Thessaloniki at the agreed time, and back to it; the legs above start at the White Tower, and the first and the last follow your address. Dion has a Tuesday rule of its own: 08:30 to 15:30 on Tuesdays from April to October, when the other days run to 20:00 in summer, and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from November to March, so a winter day is any of the other five; the museum opens at 11:00 in summer, which the two hours allow for. The Thessaloniki page sets this day beside the city tour and the Pella day.
In Greece, guiding visitors in museums and archaeological sites is the work of state-qualified guides registered with the Ministry of Tourism (Law 5121/2024, Articles 33, 34 and 40). Our drivers are not guides: they drive, wait and give practical orientation on the road. We can book a licensed guide for you on request and quote the guide separately. No. The day drives: two hours at Dion, two in Litochoro, and the road up the flank of the mountain as far as the time allows, with stops for the view. A hike is a different day; ask through the custom tour form.
From April to October 08:30 to 15:30 on Tuesdays, by the portal's table, against 08:00 to 20:00 on the other days of summer; from November to March closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The driver plans the hour of arrival round it.
The portal prints a ticket line on the park's page and another on the museum's, at the same figures, and does not say whether one covers both; budget for two and ask at the gate. The ticket printed above is the park's.
In Litochoro, 15 minutes from the park, within the two hours planned there, at your own expense, the driver waiting; the park itself lists a café or restaurant on the portal if you would rather eat before the museum.
68 minutes and 90.8 km from the White Tower to the park as OpenStreetMap routes it without traffic, 71 back from Litochoro, 154 minutes in the day; the mountain road after lunch comes on top, as far as the time allows.
