What is there to see, and how long does a visit take?

The city the Dorian colonists from Sparta founded on the steep south-eastern promontory of the island, on the Ministry portal’s account, and kept for a thousand years: streets, houses, the agora and the sanctuaries laid along the ridge of Mesa Vouno, with the sea on both sides and Kamari and Perissa below. No official page recommends a visit length. The road up from Kamari takes 10 minutes by the portal’s own count, and the same page gives the walk up at an hour and ten minutes and warns that it is hard in the north wind: we drive, and we plan an hour at the top before the drive back. With a licensed guide the usual request is an hour and a half.

How much is the ticket, and when is it open?

10 EUR (checked 22 Oct 2026, hh.gr) full and half price reduced, paid at the gate; admission is free on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September, 28 October, and on the first and third Sunday of each month from November to March. From 1 April to 31 October the site opens from 08:30 to 15:30 every day but Wednesday, when it is closed; in November it opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only; from 1 December to 28 February it is open by appointment, arranged through the Ephorate on the two numbers the portal prints; in March the summer days and hours return. Last admission is 20 minutes before closing, and the site stays closed on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25 and 26 December. The dates and figures were read on the Ministry’s visitor portal on 22 October 2026; the ticket below prints them with their source.

How do we get there, and where does the driver wait?

From the top of the cable car the drive is 18 min and 12 km without traffic, routed on OpenStreetMap, down the island to Kamari and up the road to the site; the portal counts the last stretch from Kamari at 10 minutes by car. Your driver takes you up, waits at the parking the official amenities list names, and brings you down the same way; the 3:30 closing means a morning or early-afternoon visit, never the end of a day. For cruise guests the climb from the old port comes first, as on every Santorini day: the cruise port guide explains the cable car, the steps and the timing back.

Driver or licensed guide inside?

Our drivers drive, wait and give practical orientation; guiding inside an archaeological site is the work of state-licensed guides under Law 5121/2024, and one is added on request and quoted separately by the office. Without a guide, the site’s own panels and the portal’s page are what you have, so read the page before the day. Our guide on drivers and licensed guides says what each does.

Steps, shade and toilets

The official amenities list names a WC and parking, nothing more; no official page states the steps or the shade, and we do not guess. What the portal does say is that the walk up from Kamari is no joke in the north wind: on a windy day ask the driver how the ridge is before you commit, and bring a hat and water, because the ruins stand in the open.

Which tours stop here?

None of the fixed days: the 5-hour tour stays on the caldera side and the south coast, and the full day has 32 minutes to spare, less than the site needs with its drive. On the full day Ancient Thera replaces the beach stop on request, which the office confirms by email with the day’s order; on a car and driver by the hour it takes an hour at the top plus the drives from wherever you start. Either way the ticket is paid at the gate and is not in the tour price.
