What does a full day look like, stop by stop?

Eight stops in eight hours with 128 min of driving without traffic, routed on OpenStreetMap from the top of the cable car. A quarter of an hour at the blue-domed church of Firostefani (2 min and 0.9 km) and an hour in Oia (13 min and 10.2 km) fill the morning in the north. Then the road crosses the island to the Prophet Elias monastery on the highest point (35 min and 25.2 km) for 20 minutes, and drops to Pyrgos (12 min and 4.3 km) for half an hour in the lanes. The south is Akrotiri (15 min and 9.3 km) with an hour inside, Red Beach (8 min and 3.5 km) for 20 minutes, and Perivolos (18 min and 9.5 km) for 75 minutes of lunch and a swim; the winery with the caldera view (13 min and 8.2 km) takes 40 minutes before the 12 min and 9 km back to Fira. That is 5 h 20 min at the stops and 2 h 8 min on the road, half an hour in hand for a slow lunch; the 5-hour tour makes the same loop with photo stops, and a car and driver by the hour runs it in whatever order and length you like.

Is there time to swim?

Yes: 75 minutes at Perivolos is lunch and a swim, and the beach can be Perissa or Kamari instead, your choice on the day. If the sea matters more than the winery, its 40 minutes move to the beach; if Oia matters more than the beach, the beach becomes a photo stop and Oia gets an hour and a half. The order is agreed with the driver in the morning and stays within eight hours. One more swap, on request: Ancient Thera, the Dorian city on the ridge above Kamari, takes the beach’s place; it closes at 15:30 and is shut on Wednesdays in season, so tell us the date and the office confirms the order by email.

Akrotiri: the ticket, the driver and the guide

An hour inside the prehistoric town under its bioclimatic shelter, with the driver parked outside and waiting. The ticket, 20 EUR (checked 8 Oct 2026, hh.gr) full and half price reduced, is paid at the gate for a chosen date and time slot, roughly three and a half hours after the start on this route; book it or let us name the slot in the confirmation. Access to the official Digital Guide app comes with it. By law the driver does not guide inside: guiding in archaeological sites and museums is the work of state-licensed guides under Law 5121/2024, and one is added on request, quoted separately.

Steps, shade, toilets and lunch

Lunch is at Perivolos by the black sand, at your own expense, in the 75 minutes planned there, and the driver waits through it. The one shaded visit is Akrotiri, under its shelter, where the official amenities list names a WC, a café and parking. Cruise guests climb once, before the tour: the cable car or the port authority’s 587 steps up from the old port. No official page states the steps in the lanes of Oia and Pyrgos, the shade on the monastery hill or the toilets at the beaches, so ask your driver on the day. The vehicle is air-conditioned, with bottled water in it.

What does it cost?

700 EUR per group for up to three guests in a sedan and 800 EUR for four to seven in a minivan, as the ticket above prints them from the office’s rate card, which is 200 EUR each when four share the day; from eight guests the day is 100 EUR per person in a minibus. The booking form shows the total for your number before you send, and the office confirms it by email. Paid to the driver on the day; nothing is paid on the site. Where do we meet, and can cruise guests do a full day?

At your hotel or villa anywhere on the island, at the exit of the cable car’s top station for cruise guests, on the quay at Athinios for ferries and for the guests a large ship lands there, or in the arrivals area of the airport, always with a sign with your name. A full day from a ship needs a call of eight hours plus the margin we keep before all-aboard, so it fits the long calls only; the booking form checks your ship’s times, the cruise port page prints the call each tour needs, and the cable-car guide covers the queue.
