Planned at eleven hours because Vourvourou lies on the far shore of the second finger: two hours in the lagoon, an hour and a half in old Nikiti with lunch and the estate's two-hour tasting; the office confirms the length when it quotes the day, and a day without the tasting, or with a second beach, is a matter of asking.

What fits in eleven hours?

Three stops and 283 minutes at the wheel, routed on OpenStreetMap without traffic: from the White Tower 111 min and 113.8 km to Karydi beach at Vourvourou, on the far shore of the second finger, for two hours in the sea pool; 20 min and 17.8 km back west to old Nikiti for an hour and a half of lanes and lunch; 30 min and 24.8 km down the western shore to the Porto Carras estate for a two-hour tasting; 122 min and 121.0 km home to the city, or to your hotel. Forty-seven minutes stay loose. The estate sets the afternoon: its site opens the doors every day from ten to half past six and wants a tasting reserved 48 hours ahead, so the day starts between eight and nine, swims first, before the beach fills, and reaches the vineyard after lunch. The Thessaloniki page sets this day beside the Kassandra day, the first finger’s, and the other days quoted on request; the Meteora day is the other road of eleven hours from the city.

Karydi beach and the bay of Vourvourou

Vourvourou is a seaside village and resort about 100 km from the airport, framed by pines, as the Region of Central Macedonia’s tourism site describes it, and across its water lie nine islets, the largest of them Diaporos, 3.2 square kilometres of pine forest down to the sand with no roads, no residents and no shops; its bay Kryfto, the hidden one, runs 700 metres into the island, stays calm, shallow and warm even in winter and shelters boats when the sea turns. Karydi is the most famous of the area’s beaches by the same site: a creek that makes a sea pool on the balcony of Vourvourou towards Mount Athos, bounded by white rocks, with hundreds of metres of golden sand, emerald shallows protected from wind and waves and a soft sandy bottom, which the page recommends for children; the rocks at its mouth are for exploring, and the lush mountain across the gulf is Athos itself. The beach is unorganised, with small canteens for the basics, so the sunbed is your own towel and the shade the pines’, and two hours here are the swim, the rocks and the view. A boat or kayak to Diaporos is rented at Vourvourou for a crossing of a few minutes, by the Region’s page; the day does not include one, and the office says what it can arrange if you ask. The driver waits with the vehicle at the beach.

Old Nikiti: the stone lanes and lunch

Twenty minutes back towards the root of the peninsula, Nikiti is the crossroads of Sithonia, 100 km from Thessaloniki, with more than 3,000 residents in winter and over 20,000 in summer, by the Municipality of Sithonia’s own page; the modern village runs along two kilometres of Blue Flag beach, and the old village climbs the hill above it. The Region’s site counts the historic settlement as an example of traditional Macedonian architecture: stone houses, cobblestone streets and courtyards on the slopes with the view of the Toroneos gulf, the church of Saint Nikitas on the central square, old mansions in the narrow alleys and small shops selling local products. The municipality’s page dates that church to 1867 by the founders’ plaques on its walls, puts the village’s beginnings in the 14th century on a monastic dependency, and names the church of the Koimisis of the 16th century a little above it, today the cemetery church, whose wall paintings survive only in fragments. An hour and a half here is the lanes, the square and lunch, at your own expense: the Region’s pages describe the tavernas of the shore and the shops of the old village without naming one, and this page names none. The driver parks at the edge of the old village and waits.

The Porto Carras estate: the vineyard and the tasting

Thirty minutes down the western shore, past the beaches the Region lists between Nikiti and Neos Marmaras, Kalogria, Spathies, Elia and Lagomandra, the road reaches the Porto Carras estate, planted from the 1960s on the slopes of Meliton across 4,500 acres, one of the largest single certified organic vineyards in Greece by the estate’s own site, with a winery designed by Walter Gropius and a region designated PDO Slopes of Meliton; here Malagousia was rescued from near extinction, Assyrtiko was planted for the first time outside Santorini, and Limnio, the oldest recorded Greek variety, was revived. The visit is a tasting of two hours in the Melissanthi Hall, in Greek or English, from the packages the site prints: A Taste of Terroir at 9 EUR (checked 27 Oct 2026, domaineportocarras.com) a person, three glasses of 150 ml, a white, a blend of the Meliton slopes and a rosé; Greek Varietals Discovery at the same figure, Assyrtiko, Malagousia and Limnio; the Winemaker’s Selection and the Grand Reserve Experience, three vintages of Château Porto Carras back to 1990, at higher prices on their pages; and an open tasting from the full list, priced by what you choose on the spot. Food plateaus, vegetarian or with Greek cheeses and cold cuts, are an optional extra. The estate asks for a reservation at least 48 hours in advance, takes nothing at booking and charges on the day, so the office books the package you name when it confirms the day. The doors open every day, 10:00 to 18:30, by the estate’s contact page; the driver waits at the estate, and the glasses are yours. The hours as the site prints them:

  • All year: every day, 10:00 to 18:30

Driver, guide, and why the day is quoted

Our driver drives, waits at each stop with the vehicle and gives the practical orientation, where the car stands, where the path to the sand begins, where to meet. No stop of this day is a site where the law reserves guiding for state-licensed guides (Law 5121/2024), so no guide is quoted and none is needed; the estate’s own staff lead the tasting. The day runs by request, so no figure prints here: ask for it with the form beside the title, and the office answers by email with one figure for the vehicle and the driver, for your party and your date; the tasting is paid at the estate, and nothing is paid on the site. The driver-or-guide guide explains the rule. A day with the coves of Kavourotripes instead of the estate, a fish lunch at the port of Ormos Panagias, or Parthenonas, the stone village at 350 metres above Neos Marmaras, goes in the custom tour form.

Steps, shade, toilets and lunch

Lunch is in old Nikiti, your own, in the hour and a half planned there. Steps and shade no official page counts, so no figure is printed: at Karydi the Region’s page names pines and small canteens and no facilities, so the shade is the trees’ and the nearest toilets are the canteens’ or the village’s; the lanes of old Nikiti are cobbled and climb; the estate’s hall is a building with its own conveniences, which its site does not list. The driver’s orientation at each stop covers the way in, the steps, the shade and the nearest toilets, which no page we read lists. Bring swimwear, a towel, a hat and your own umbrella, since the beach rents none.

What does it cost for our group?

One figure from the office, per group, for the vehicle and the driver, answered by email within the time the contact page promises; the total is for the party, not per person, so the more of you ride, the less each pays. The day’s one fee is the estate’s tasting, 9 EUR (checked 27 Oct 2026, domaineportocarras.com) a person for the entry package, with the date it was checked, paid at the estate on the day; the dearer packages are priced on the estate’s pages, and the beach and the village cost nothing. The fees guide lists every ticket we print. A booking cancels free of charge up to 72 hours before the start; the tasting has the estate’s own cancellation terms, which the office passes on with the quote.

Where do we meet the driver?

At the door of your hotel in Thessaloniki at the agreed time, anywhere in the city or its suburbs, and back to it. The figures above start at the White Tower, 1 h 51 min and 114 km to Karydi, and the first and the last leg follow your address; a hotel in the centre changes almost nothing, and from one further out the office names the difference when it confirms. A start at half past eight has you in the water by half past ten, at the table in Nikiti by one and at the estate by half past two; the estate’s closing leaves no room for a start after nine. The Thessaloniki page has the meeting rules for every day from the city.

Questions guests ask

Why is there no price on this page?

Because the day runs by request: the office answers your request by email with one figure for the vehicle and the driver, for your party and your date, and nothing is paid on the site. The tasting package at the estate is the day's one fee, paid there on the day; the beach and the village cost nothing.

Is the estate open on our date, and what does the tasting need?

By its own contact page the estate opens every day, 10:00 to 18:30, and each tasting package lasts two hours, in Greek or English. Its booking page asks for a reservation at least 48 hours in advance, takes no payment at booking and charges on the day; the office books the package you name when it confirms the day, so a date is fixed once you accept the quote, and the estate's own cancellation terms apply to the tasting.

Can we skip the tasting for more beach?

Yes: say so in the request, and the two hours go to a second beach of the Region's list, Trani Ammouda beside Ormos Panagias with its Blue Flag or the coves of Kavourotripes further down the shore, or the day ends earlier and the office quotes it shorter. Without the estate the day is a beach day with lunch in the stone village.

Is Karydi beach organised?

No. The Region's page calls it unorganised, with small canteens that provide the basics, so visitors enjoy it freely with their own equipment: bring a towel, a hat and an umbrella if you want one, since the shade is the pines'. The same page recommends the sea pool for children, shallow and protected from wind and waves, with a soft sandy bottom and rocks to explore at its mouth.

Where is lunch?

In old Nikiti, at your own expense, in a taverna of your choosing in the lanes or down in the seaside village; the Region's pages describe the tavernas of the shore and the small shops of the old settlement without naming one, and so do we. The driver parks at the edge of the old village and waits, and the hour and a half there covers the lanes, the square with its church and the meal.

Can we take this day in winter?

Yes, as a day of the bay, the stone village and the estate: the Region's page says the bay of Vourvourou ends in shallow water that always stays warm and suits winter swimmers, the estate opens every day of the year by its contact page, and the lanes of old Nikiti are the same in January. The light ends early, so the day starts at eight, and whether the water is for swimming is yours to judge on the shore.
