What is there to see, and how long does a visit take?

The prehistoric town of Akrotiri, dug out and kept under a bioclimatic shelter, so you walk through the excavation under a roof, in the shade, whatever the weather. No official page recommends a visit length; our 5-hour tour plans 40 minutes here between the Prophet Elias monastery and Red Beach, the full day an hour, and with a licensed guide an hour and a half is the usual request on the car and driver by the hour. Access to the official Digital Guide app comes with the ticket.

How much is the ticket, and when is it open?

20 EUR (checked 8 Oct 2026, hh.gr) full and half price reduced, paid at the gate for a chosen date and time slot; the ticket is for a single entry, changes are allowed up to two hours before the visit and at most twice, and it is not refunded. Children under 18, young people from 18 to 25 from the EU, and visitors with a disability enter free with an ID card, a passport or the disability certificate; one companion enters free when the disability is 67 percent or more. From April to August the site opens at 08:00 and closes at 20:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends, and keeps short hours, 08:30 to 15:30, on Mondays and Thursdays; the closing time steps back through September and October. From 1 November to 31 March it closes at 15:30 and is shut every Tuesday, and it is closed on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25 and 26 December. The last entry is 20 minutes before closing. The full timetable with the date it was checked is under Opening hours below, and the same fee ticket prints on every tour that stops here; the entrance-fees guide sets it beside the other sites.

How do we get there, and where does the driver wait?

By road from the north or the east of the island: 20 min and 13 km from the top of the Fira cable car, 14 min and 10 km from the ferry port at Athinios, 19 min and 13 km from the airport and 34 min and 27 km from Oia, all without traffic and routed on OpenStreetMap. The official amenities list names parking, a café, a shop and a WC; the driver parks and waits outside the site for as long as you take, then the day continues to Red Beach, 8 min and 3.5 km on.

Driver or licensed guide inside?

The driver stays outside: guiding inside archaeological sites is reserved to state-licensed guides under Law 5121/2024. If you want the excavation explained, say so in the request and the office quotes a licensed guide with the day; if you would rather walk it with the Digital Guide app that comes with the ticket, the driver’s orientation at the gate is enough.

Steps, shade and toilets

Shade, yes: the whole excavation is under its shelter. Toilets, yes: a WC is on the official amenities list, with the café. Steps: no official page states them, or ramps, or a lift; Hellenic Heritage lists the word accessibility among the amenities with no detail, so ask your driver, or phone the site’s guardhouse on +30 22860 81939, which answers access questions, before you plan a day around it. The vehicles have no lift or ramp; a folding wheelchair travels in the boot.

Which tours stop here?

The 5-hour tour and the full day, both priced per group from the rate card, and the car and driver by the hour for a visit at your own pace; the Santorini page compares them. The 4-hour tour does not come this far south.
