Plan around your ship

Type the two times from your ship's daily programme. The list keeps the 90-minute margin before all-aboard and prints what is left to spare.

Your ship's programme has the times that count. The port publishes its own list of calls: Cruise schedule page of the port of Katakolo, with the year's arrivals file (katakoloport.gr, checked 14 Oct 2026).

Port logistics

  • Katakolo is the port of Pyrgos, the capital of Elis, founded in 1857 and renamed Port of Katakolon - John Latsis in September 2018; a fully equipped cruise service station, two cruise ships hosted at a time, and berths for third-generation ships over 350 m long (the port's profile on the same portal)
  • Cruise fee per passenger landing at a Greek port other than Mykonos and Santorini: 5 euros from 1 June to 30 September, 3 euros in April, May and October, 1 euro from November to March; the cruise line pays it to the State, nothing is paid at the quay (Law 5162/2024, article 27)

Do cruise ships dock at Katakolon, or tender?

They dock. The port’s own site, run by the Municipal Port Fund of Pyrgos, describes three piers for cruise ships, two of them for ships up to 300 metres long and one for ships up to 200 metres, with 7.5 to 10.5 metres of water; the port’s characteristics page on the Hellenic Ports Association’s cruise portal counts three quays of 682 metres in all, and its profile says the port hosts two cruise ships at a time from a fully equipped cruise service station. An anchorage lies 0.8 nautical miles out, but the portal marks it as not compulsory, and no ship needs it while a pier is free. The three sources do not agree on the largest ship the piers take, 300, 330 or over 350 metres, so the ticket above prints the port’s own figure first and the others after it, each with the date we read it. Which pier your ship gets is not published: the port’s cruise schedule page carries the year’s arrivals file, which the planner above links, and your ship’s own programme is the word on your call.

How far is Ancient Olympia from the Katakolon cruise port?

By road, 50 min and 39 km from the pier to the gate of the archaeological site, as OpenStreetMap routes it without traffic, and 50 min and 36 km to the Archaeological Museum, which stands 3 km from the site on the other side of the Kladeos. The Ministry’s portal gives no figure from Katakolo: its directions count 3 hours and 30 minutes from Athens and 1 hour and 25 minutes from Patras, which is why a port call is the way most visitors reach Olympia. The forum threads that ask about a transfer get the same answer from us: the drive is under an hour each way, and the hours ashore go into the sanctuary and the museum, not into the road. The portal’s destination page for the port mentions the historic railway line from Katakolo to Pyrgos and Olympia, revived in recent years, without a timetable, and no official page lists a taxi fare, so this page prints the routed road and nothing it cannot source.

Where does the driver wait at the pier?

At the exit of the pier area, with your name on a sign. The characteristics page leaves the number of passenger terminals blank and the profile speaks of a cruise service station, so we name no terminal; the port works under an approved security plan of the ISPS code, by its own site, which means the driver waits where the fenced area ends and not at the gangway. The portal’s destination page puts the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology and the Museum of Ancient Greek Musical Instruments at the entrance of Katakolo, opposite the railway station, and the lighthouse of 1865 one kilometre from the port, which places the village at the end of the pier; no official page counts the walk, so we print no minutes. Tell us the ship’s name and its times when you book; a pier away from the exit is one message to the driver, whose phone and WhatsApp are on your confirmation.

When should we leave the ship?

As soon as it is cleared, which at Katakolo is quick: the characteristics page puts the clearance at 0 to 30 minutes for a call from inside the Schengen area and the same from outside it, with passports neither checked nor stamped and passengers going ashore on the ship’s ID. Give us the ship’s arrival time and the driver is at the exit from then on. The sanctuary opens at 08:00 from April to October and at 08:30 in winter, with the last admission 20 minutes before closing, so an early call loses nothing; the table below is the Ministry’s, with the date we read it. Our day ends 90 minutes before all-aboard, the booking form refuses a tour that does not fit between your arrival and that margin, and with no tender to queue for, the margin is the only buffer to think about.

  • 1 Apr to 31 Aug: 08:00 to 20:00, last entry 19:40
  • 1 Sep to 15 Sep: 08:00 to 19:30, last entry 19:10
  • 16 Sep to 30 Sep: 08:00 to 19:00, last entry 18:40
  • 1 Oct to 15 Oct: 08:00 to 18:30, last entry 18:10
  • 16 Oct to 31 Oct: 08:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:40
  • 1 Nov to 31 Mar: 08:30 to 15:30, last entry 15:10

Which tour fits a Katakolon port call?

One tour, sized to the port: the 5-hour tour to Ancient Olympia needs six and a half hours in port, the five hours plus the margin, and the card above prints that call. It holds 110 minutes in the sanctuary, an hour in the Archaeological Museum and 115 minutes of driving in all; we routed it at four hours first and dropped the idea, because the pier is 50 minutes from Olympia each way and four hours would have left barely two for the site and the museum together. A call shorter than six and a half hours, or a party that wants the site alone and the village after, goes through the custom tour form, where you type your hours and the office answers with a day and its price. A longer call keeps the same route and adds time at the site; say so when you book.

What does a private shore excursion cost per person?

The price is for the vehicle, so the share falls as the party grows: four guests pay 125 EUR a head on the 5-hour tour and six pay 83 EUR; from eight guests the rate is per person in a minibus. On top comes one ticket, paid at the gate: 20 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr) for Ancient Olympia, which by the Ministry’s portal covers the archaeological site, the Archaeological Museum of Olympia and the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games, reduced 10 EUR (checked 14 Oct 2026, hh.gr), free on the days the entrance-fees guide lists. Your ship also pays the State a cruise fee for every passenger it lands at Katakolon, highest from June to September and lowest in winter, under Law 5162/2024; the line pays it, nothing is paid at the quay, and the ticket above gives the figures. Lunch, a licensed guide and a tip are extra; the tipping guide says what is usual.

Can we see Olympia on our own from the ship?

The village of Katakolo, yes, on foot: the portal’s page for the port describes the harbour beach where the fishing boats tie up, the shops and restaurants it pictures, and the two museums at its entrance. Olympia is another matter, because the sanctuary is 50 min away by road and no official page gives a train timetable or a taxi fare, so the way there is a vehicle with a driver who knows the hours of the call. What a car adds is the time: the drive, the site, the museum and the drive back, with the driver waiting at the parking the portal lists at both and nothing left to arrange on the day. The driver-or-guide guide says who may guide inside the sanctuary and who may not.

What if we are late for the ship?

The plan is built so that it does not happen: one road there and back, the margin before all-aboard that the form enforces, and a driver who shortens the museum rather than the margin. Katakolo being a dock, there is no last tender to catch; all-aboard is the deadline and the day is planned to it, with 15 minutes loose on the tour’s own timing. We do not promise the return to the ship; we promise the plan above and a phone that is answered. If the ship changes its pier or its times, write as soon as you know, and the driver moves with it.

ΚατάκολοKatakolon cruise pier

Your driver waits at the exit of the pier area in Katakolo, with a sign with your name. Cruise ships dock here: the port has three piers for cruise ships, two of them for ships up to 300 metres, and hosts two ships at a time, but publishes no berth per call, so give us the ship's name and its times when you book. The port's clearance is 0 to 30 minutes by the Hellenic Ports Association's portal, and the driver is at the exit from then on; a pier away from the exit is one message to the driver, whose phone and WhatsApp are on your confirmation.
